God the Good Catch

An acquaintance of mine forwarded an email from a young woman who is considering dating a man with religious convictions and I thought I would go through it because I've encountered many of the difficulties raised in it. I'll quote in full first [with names taken out]:

oh and on his profile he listed a christian woman who goes to church weekly as his ideal woman. well, i haven't been to church in years and i don't plan on going anytime in the near future.

church has never been my thing. in past years i went, but only because i thought that's what i should do. in the last year or so i've been on a spiritual journey that has ironically led me away from religion and more into an appreciation of god, regardless of what his name is. christians, as you're aware, believe there's only one god (eric,
this blind date dude, feels the same) which i do not understand. how do christians own christ? it's like saying greenpeace owns the ocean, you know? in my mind christ is in our nature; yes, it was/is god in form, but does it really matter what his name is? i'm more interested in tuning into my soul alone, in my yoga room with my mural than i am in going to church.

how could a man who is so involved in church want a woman like me who is so nebulous on religion? i think though it takes a fearless person to sort of live in the mystery...a little bit of this a little bit of that....lately i've done some reading on sufism, i think i might more alined with that anything else; although, i'm not telling eric that because he'll probably tell me i'm going straight to hell. :)

Now let's parse this. I'll put her words in blue:

oh and on his profile he listed a christian woman who goes to church weekly as his ideal woman. well, rich, i haven't been to church in years and i don't plan on going anytime in the near future.

I sympathize with the plight, and I will approach it by separating the religion from...
